Perros de Las Protestas

Those who know me well, know my love of dingos, our loyal brethren. Although my life doesn’t allow me to have a dog at the moment, I will again one day. If you are a dog person, they are there with you through everything. They are an intricate part of our lives and our social structure.

The same is true here in Peru. They love their dogs. Many people dress their pets up in jackets and other outfits. Even stray street dogs are treated more kindly here, unlike many places I have been.

They are everywhere, even throughout the protests they can be seen walking with the protesters or laying down amongst the police. They appear to enjoy the excitement of it and want to be with people. They only seem to disperse when the violence erupts and the explosions begin.

The protests have been highly charged, intense, and at times become decidedly dangerous. Documenting the events can be stressful and I need to have my head on a swivel with my spidey senses tingling.

Every now and then while I am photographing the unfolding events, I will see the smiling face of a dog amongst the chaos and it will give me a slight reprieve from the pandemonium and bring a smile to my face for a brief moment. I often try to snap a quick photo of them amongst the protests when I can.

These are a few photos of the ‘Perros de las Protestas.’
