Update From Protests In Lima

Hello Friends,

Sorry for the lack of any update recently. Things have been a little chaotic and time moves differently in the midst of a revolution. Here is a brief update for now…

I am currently in Lima about to board a plane back to Cusco. I spent a week traveling and working on a story about a group of indigenous Quechua protesters who travelled from their home in the Andes to Lima to be heard. I plan to share that story with you in the next few days as soon as I find/make some time.

After a 40-hour bus ride and many perils following that story, I found myself in Lima where protesters from all over the country have converged to intensify their efforts. The protests here are well beyond anything I have experienced. The sheer numbers alone are astounding, but it is magnified by the level of anger and violence along with the police brutality which brings things to a different level.

It is a small percentage of people that are partaking in the violence. There are thousands of people taking part in the protests that are not involved in the clashes. The police are using force against everyone though, including journalists.

Last week two journalists were shot in the leg and there have been multiple assaults on photojournalists captured on video. I myself have had intimidation tactics used against me and one death threat.

International news agencies have denounced the tactics being used by the government and police. I had to step away for the past several days as the agency I am shooting for, Getty Images Reportage, wanted me to complete my safety equipment kit before photographing any more of the protests.

These are a few images from the protests and clashes I captured in Lima last week. I will be sharing my experiences and images on Global National News this Thursday, February 9th. Keep your eyes open for that and I will be back soon to share the story of my journey with you about the indigenous Quechua protesters that I was immersed with for a week.

As always, thank you for all the well wishes and support.
